Welcome to AMSA Australian Capital Territory

AMSA ACT has close links with the NSW Branch, and operates as a sub-Branch.

Canberra has some 30 different agencies, departments, organisations and institutes with marine science or maritime interests. To foster increased networking and the professional opportunities this may bring, AMSA ACT subBranch holds one to several seminar based meetings per year at the Geosciences Australia building in Symonston (thanks to the generous support of GA). The meetings involve one or more guest speakers followed by a discussion time and then an informal networking opportunity over beer, wine and pizza.

AMSA ACT events have included:

  • October 2004: Maritime Australia 2020 - Drivers for Marine Science, a Panel Discussion Seminar with Mr Craig Roy, Director CSIRO Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship; Mr Peter Dundas-Smith, Executive Director Fisheries Research and Development Corporation; and Rear Admiral Russ Crane RAN, Director General Coastwatch.
  • September 2003: Australia's True Blue Science: Ocean Knowledge and Sustainable Wealth. Tony Haymet, Chief, CSIRO Division of Marine Research
  • July 2003: The Science behind Australia's Extended Continental Shelf: where is it, what does it look like and what's in it? Dr Philip Symonds, Geoscience Australia and Member of the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
  • April 2004: From the very small, to the very large - and most of the bits in between. Prediction and epistemology in aquatic systems. Dr Graham Harris, Head of CSIROs Flagship Program.
  • July 2005. Dr Steve Widdicombe, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, a marine ecologist with particular expertise in using field observations and large manipulative experiments addressed issues relating to benthic ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem function.
