WAMSI/AMSA WA Show & Tell Mini Symposium (26 Feb 2008)

Context for Day 1

The WAMSI-AMSA-WA Show & Tell seminar was held at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle on the 26 Feb. The event provided a snapshot of what WA marine researchers are working in WA and gave them an opportunity to briefly describe, in a relaxed atmosphere, the current ‘hot topics’ and themes that researchers, their staff and students have underway in the various regions of WA. The presentations included some of their preliminary findings and also the research planned for commencement in 2008.

The Hot topics and themes for the mini symposium were

Ningaloo region (Keynote speakers; Neil Loneragan and Andrew Heyward), which was a very popular session, Perth Metropolitan region (keynote address from Rod Lenaton and Karen Hillman), South Coast and Capes region (Keynote address from Ewan Buckley and Gary Kendrick) North West Shelf Region (Keynote from Ray Masini and Jim Stoddart).

The event was a huge success, with a capacity crowd and a great networking session held at Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle at the close of proceedings.

Context for Day 2:

The Second day of the Show and Tell was held at the CSIRO Auditorium in Floreat. Day 2 focused on the first mini symposium for the WASI Node 1 projects which are focussed characterising south-west Australian marine coastal and shelf ecosystem structure and function with a view to enhancing our ability to understand, predict and assess ecosystem response to anthropogenic and natural pressures. The series of presentation featured data collected from the 28 day R.V. Southern Surveyor voyage conducted during May/June 2007 which was tasked investigating the factors responsible for the autumn bloom or deep chlorophyll maxima observed at the shelf break and to characterise the benthic biomass, productivity and level of benthic-pelagic coupling on the shelf.

WAMSI and AMSA-WA wish to acknowledge Western Australian Museum for their support in hosting this event.

AMSA WA Quiz Night

The inaugural AMSA WA was held at the Nedlands Yacht club on the. The venue was fantastic and the night a huge success with the Nedlands Yacht club providing the perfect back drop to a night of challenging questions and beer at 1980’s prices. John Huisman was the brilliant as the MC for the night and kept the night rolling with at time dubious, but alway entertaining marine related jokes.
